April Fools!

I’m not a big practical joke kind of guy. For years, I worked for a Church Summer Camping program up in Maine. Lot’s of people there were practical jokers. Saran wrap over the toilet bowl so when you go, it goes everywhere. Drawing on someone’s face with a sharpie while they were sleeping. Unloosening the tops of the salt shakers. No. I just watched, because I was always afraid of retaliation, and I didn’t want to have to be looking over my shoulder all the time. Today is April Fool’s Day. Not my favorite holiday. People are always trying to “get” you. “Someone just hit your car! You have to come see!” Somebody even told me the other day that Tom Brady was leaving the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! Surely, that is an April Fool’s joke!

David writes twice, in Psalms 14:1 and 53:1, “Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!”

This is not an accusation of stupidity. Many atheists are very intelligent. David is just saying that people who deny the existence of God often do so because they want to continue living their lives the way they want. No accountability. No responsibility. I find it funny that these same people will whole-heartedly proclaim that their saintly mother or grandmother who has passed is in heaven. Wait a minute. You don’t even believe in heaven.

If there is no God, there is no justice. The corrupt and evil do whatever they want while they live and never have to answer for actions. Sometimes they will spend time incarcerated, but often they are never caught. Can someone really live a life of destruction and evil and that’s that? No accountability? No responsibility?

No. I believe there will be a Day of Judgment. A day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. On that day, believers will be welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven, and non-believers will finally realize how foolish they were. It will be too late then. That’s why we need to do everything we can to share the truth with them now. To pray for them.

There’s a story of an atheist who complained to a Christian friend, “It’s not right! You Christians have your special holidays, like Christmas and Easter. Jews celebrate their national holidays of Passover and Yom Kippur. But we atheists have nothing. It’s unfair. It’s discrimination.” To which their friend said, “You do have a holiday. April Fool’s Day.” Hey, “Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!’”
