I am not a technology wiz. I know how to use what I have (for the most part) but struggle each time I have to learn to navigate an updated operating system, new phone, or universal TV remote. Technology does amaze me though. I have been alive to witness supersonic air travel, a moon landing, color television, microwave ovens, 8-track tapes, cassette tapes, CD’s, answering machines, fax machines, cell phones, personal computers, the internet, and smartphones. We no longer have to use maps. Simply type the address into your GPS. Last year I bought a 2017 car. It literally drives itself. It keeps within the lane you’re driving as well as speeds up to whatever speed you chose and slows down or stops if something is in front of you. It’s amazing. I had no idea such things existed when I went car shopping.

I remember when I first got married. Friday afternoons I had to make sure I had enough cash on me to get through the weekend. If I needed more, I had to cash a check at my grocery store’s courtesy counter. Today, I have a debit card that I no longer even have to insert into the machine. Just tap and I’m good to go. I can order something online and it is on my front steps two days. On occasion, same day! I don’t even have to brew an entire pot of coffee anymore. I just choose from a variety of blends and pop a single pod into the coffee maker and in 60-90 seconds I have a fresh brewed hot cup of joe. We live in an incredible time. We truly do.

Though, all of this technology can be used for good. It can also be used for evil. Jesus warned us, “The thief’s [Satan’s] purpose is to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10), and there has been an explosion of online pornography, social media bullying, and a wide variety of financial scams. While enjoying all of this technology, we need to be vigilant, careful. As the apostle Peter cautioned, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

When we engage the internet, we need to be cautious of where we go and what we click on. Jesus told the disciples to, “…be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). And when we do post on social media, we should always be Ephesians 4:29 people. “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”

The world wide web is a mission field for sure, and we can use all of this advanced technology to build the kingdom. Post something besides pictures of your children, grandchildren, food, or pets. Like this post. Share this post. Tag this post. Share the gospel.

Who knows what technology will be available in the years to come? Whatever it is, we must not leave it only for the evil one to exploit. No! #Go and make disciples of all the nations!
